Its like reading a good book!. This is the one Spiderweb game that I have not completed, and do not like. I have played all of the Geneforge series, all of the original Avernum games, except 1-3, and all of the Avadon games. I have played all the Avernum remakes, and then I played this. I do not like this game, it is the single outlier on the graph, the only one I have given a negative review.Spiderweb games have three main things that draw me to them: Great combat, fantastic worlds to explore, and amazing story lines and characters. This game either lacks one of these things, or destroys them. Let me elaborate on these three points.Maybe I am just bad at the game, and that is why I don't enjoy it? Some people will claim that. But I don't think so. I played through all the other games and beat them, though not without some difficulty of course. The fighting in this game just seems to rub me the wrong way. The combat difficulty is heavily increased, the hardest (in my opinion) out of all the other games. I have tried several different builds, and even the ones recommended on the forums in case I was doing something wrong, but nothing was changing for me. It is actually kind of crazy how difficult this game is, as soon as you leave the starting area you can be totally destroyed, even on the easiest difficulty. I actually had to lower it to the very easiest, and still wasn't having any fun. When the combat in this game isn't any fun, that is half of the game that no longer appeals to me.As for the second and third points. The world changes and is literally destroyed the more time you take, until eventually entire towns and quest-lines are just gone. I like to take my time in these games, find all the secrets, and explore everything. I don't want to be rushed through the whole game, a clock constantly ticking in my ear, counting down until the next area of the game is ruined. The timer literally destroys the characters, settings, and quests that make these games so great, if you take too long exploring the fantastic world that you want, and are encouraged, to explore. It is a strange dichotomy, a balancing act that I just can't seem to get the hang of. It just isn't fun. There goes the rest of what makes these games appealing to me.I honestly love all of the Spiderweb games, each and every one had given me dozens, some even hundreds, of hours of fun that other games just cannot seem to replicate; but Avernum 3 commits the cardinal sin of gaming for me, not being fun. I bought it full price when it came out because I was so excited to play it, since then I have picked it up, and put it down again, over and over. I just don't like it, and I have to give it a negative review.. Happy to revisit this once again, this clean update of an old favorite is many, many hours of fun.. Fantastic old-school RPG. If you enjoyed the other recent Avernum games from Spiderweb Software, then you'll doubtless enjoy this too. Some particular new things I've noticed in this one (as of playtime ~5 hrs):-Improved musical score (note to new players: music only plays in main-menu and opening cut scene).-UI has gotten a nice aesthetic overhaul (functionally it's the same as Avernum 1 & 2).-Animated cut scene setting up the story! This was a welcome touch.I spent 110 hours on Avernum 2 (just finished it a couple weeks ago); I suspect I will do the same with this one. Final note: you can play spiderweb's games entirely with one hand, leaving the other free to each cheetos/pet the cat/whatever.. Muted graphics make for hard-to-read environments while the gameplay goes on in a plodding pace compared to the original. Tweaked statistics for skills and combat are more sophisticated and complex than they used to be and are easy to figure out which at least is nice.tldr; If you're playing for the first time, might as well play this one. If you're a veteran, stick with the og.(oh how the heck do you not add mouse-scroll support after 16 years). This is the 2nd remake of one of my beloved childhood games. It was a brilliant game back then. The problem is that it's basically still the same game 20 years later, when you can do *a bit* more, even as a solo developer. If we recycled as much as this game does IRL, we would have no plastic in our oceans. The RPG and battle system have been very similar since Exile became Avernum some 15(?) years ago. If you played other Jeff Vogel games, you will see that most of the models are reused. Naturally, since this is a remake (2nd remake, no less), the world and the plot have also already existed (there are a few dialogues added for extra flavor I guess..).If you try judging Avernum 3 as a separate game, rather than your childhood love, it immediately falls flat on its face. The difficulty is strange (I played on the last one - Torment). Everything is entirely based on which level you are: if underleveled, it's pointless to even try, if overleveled, everything is a pushover.Interestingly, after the first 20% or so of the game, I was overleveled for everything I did, which made it all "fun". Except those strange super-powerful mosters I sometimes met that I had no chance to beat, even being overleveled for the rest of the dungeon. Of course, I returned later with a few more levels and stomped them.Stupid annoying♥♥♥♥♥♥about the combat system, in no particular order:1. As a pure warrior, all you ever do is swing your weapon. Your powerful, useful abilities involve swinging it a bit harder once per X rounds, or swinging it 3 extra times in one round, once per Y rounds.2. Whether you can beat an encounter is all about whether monsters can kill one of your characters in a single round. You can heal, buff and cure your entire party with one spell from one character later in the game. Even at the start, you can easily heal your warrior to full health with 1 spell.3. Related to 2, monsters that can do magical area spells and abilities are very dangerous, while everything else is basically useless. It's a bit ridiculous when a monster can use a melee attack that does nothing VS an area poison attack that hits your entire group for 30% of their health (it chooses each attack randomly). Sometimes monsters will just randomly spam area attacks and kill you, in a dungeon that's otherwise a complete pushover.4. Also related to 2, a dumb hit % chance system is in place. You can literally judge encounter difficulty by the % chance your warriors have of hitting the enemy. This cool system also makes all offensive scrolls, wands, etc, completely useless after the start of the game, because they all miss.5. The final dungeon (especially the final boss!) is stupidly easy. As mentioned before, I overleveled it. Also, monsters with area attacks were nearly absent. Just a whole bunch of melee attackers which were incredibly easy to plow through. It's kinda awful when a 20 year old game which you are remaking did this far better.6. Start and end "cinematics" somehow look even more cheap than they did in the 20 year old version. I guess that's because they are the exact same, while the rest of the game moved forward a bit. It's difficult for me to comment on the world and the story, since they are so familiar to me by now. I think you can have some fun playing through it, although it does require playing at least Avernum 2 to actually care about it. Still, this isn't one of those RPGs where you can avoid combat with your skills - 99% of your skills and most of your in-game time is spent fighting. If you already played all the better (and sometimes cheaper..) existing turn-based RPGs (e.g. Shadowrun), feel free to grab this on sale for 2-3$. Charging 20$ for a game where *nothing* is new and original is ridiculous. For a game with a combat system that would have been fine 15 years go, but in the age of Divinity: Original Sin is lackluster at best.If you loved Exile 3 as I did, I am not sure I would even suggest playing this. The biggest change for the better, is, ironically, one of the worst parts of the game as it is now - the graphics.. RNG matters way too much. First hour or two is spent retrying battles because you miss most of your attacks.. Not much more to be said then already has been said. Jeff has given us an updated Exile 3 game with plenty of content. Good writing, and extensive lands to explore make this game a CRPG epic. I was able to finish the game in chunks, putting it down and picking it back up again. It wasn't too hard to get back into the story and where I was at. As with all of the Avernum games, it is open world letting me wander to higher level areas if I wanted to. Learning the hard way that an area is deadly is something I enjoy. Very little hand holding, and that is a good thing. Thank you, Jeff, for staying consistent and good job on another great game!. I definately recommend this game for anyone looking for a good rpg game. Theres so much to explore and do, the story in my opinion is pretty good, and there are a lot of secrets to find(like a hidden bonus dungeon inside a dungeon that is pretty interesting but i wont say more then that). You also don't need to have played the first 2 to get whats going on, it gives a pretty brief summary of the first 2 games in the intro, though i do recommend playing the first 2 still. If i were to give any complaints to this it would probably be the fighting can at times get repetitve especially when in late game your pretty strong but you can still get bugged by slimes or other weak monsters you can wipe out in a single turn. The graphics also are not great but I honestly dont mind that too much, since the story is what im most interested in when it comes to Rpgs.. Already noticing a smidge more humor in this one, especially with the cutscene summarizing the last two games. If you ever played the originals or a geneforge game then you know about what to expect. Very happy spiderweb software still puts out stuff. Very nice remaster of an old game
